Tucked away in the prairie fields of Alberta, singer-songwriter Florence Foxwell writes from the farm where she and her husband have worked the land for over 40 years. Staying close to the land keeps her deeply rooted, and from that grounding comes her original indie folk, which blends pop, rock and country with a touch of blue-soul, drawing on her own life experiences.

While many musicians discover their craft early on, Florence’s creative side emerged later in life. Her early years were dedicated to raising a family and tending to the farm. She eventually turned to music to express her life experiences, as well as her reflections on world events.

After losing her father-in-law in 1996 and both of her parents in 1998, Florence found the courage to finally record the songs she had written. Her debut album, Open Windows (1999), grew out of that poignant chapter of her life and offered listeners a first glimpse of an emerging artistic voice, anchored by a simple, self-taught fingerstyle acoustic guitar technique. Her follow-up, Outside the Box (2004), chronicled her continued growth as an artist.

Miles Jackson of Ma-Me-O Music, who has produced most of Foxwell’s catalogue, says: “Her style is unmistakable and unique, and her songs are always thought provoking. She is a true ‘undiscovered gem’ and a professional in every sense of the word.”

Foxwell writes soulful, introspective songs that reveal her ongoing search for art in everyday life. Her music has always been about faith, hope, new beginnings and embracing change, encouraging listeners to look closer, connect more deeply and live “outside the box.”

She returned to releasing music with the Human EP (2017), which includes “Human” and “This Is My Alberta,” followed by a re-recorded “Deceived (Instrumental)” (2025) and “Not Today” (2026).

Her work has earned recognition over the years. In 2005, she placed second in the Performance category of the Unisong International Songwriting Contest for “I Try,” and in the Top 20 of the competition’s social issues category with “Outside the Box.” More recently, she won five Gold Medals at the 2026 European International Music Awards (EIMA) Summer Session: Best Indie Folk Single and Best Indie Folk Single Artwork for “Not Today,” Best Indie Instrumental Song for “Deceived (Instrumental),” and Best Folk/World Pop Single and Best Folk Pop Song for Social Change for “Human.”

She is an active member of the Alberta Music Industry Association, the Songwriters Association of Canada, SOCAN and CARAS.

Working independently on her own label, Foxwell continues to write, record and release music. She owns 100% of the writing and publishing for her entire catalogue, which makes licensing simple. Her latest single, “Not Today,” carries forward her tradition of honest, heartfelt songwriting, rooted in real life and delivered in her own prairie voice.
