Tucked away in the prairie fields of Alberta singer-songwriter Florence Foxwell has long been regarded as one of the province’s hidden musical gems. Alongside her husband, they operate a mid-sized farm where they have been working the land for over 40 years. Working with, and staying connected to the land keeps her deeply rooted and close to spirit. This has enabled her to create her original contemporary folk, infused with the sounds of pop, rock, and country with a touch of blue-soul, drawing deeply from her own lived experiences.

While most musicians and songwriters discover their craft early on, Florence’s creative side emerged later in life. Her early years were dedicated to raising a family and tending to the farm.

She eventually turned to music to express her life experiences and reflections on world events. The passing of her father-in-law in 1996, followed by the loss of both of her parents in 1998, propelled her to finally record the songs she had written. Her debut album, Open Windows (1999), reflected that poignant chapter and offered listeners a first glimpse of an emerging artistic voice anchored by a simple, yet distinctive fingerstyle acoustic guitar technique. Her follow-up album, Outside the Box (2004), chronicled her continued growth as an artist.

Foxwell is celebrated for crafting soulful, introspective songs that reveal her ongoing search to find art in everyday life. Her music encourages listeners to look closer, connect more deeply, embrace change and the idea of living “outside the box.”

She has also earned recognition for her songwriting – most notably a second place finish in the Performance category of the 2005 Unisong International Songwriting Contest for her song I Try. She also placed in the Top 20 of the competition’s category for songs examining social issues with Outside The Box. Her singles Human and This Is My Alberta dropped in 2017, and newly re-recorded Deceived (Instrumental) in 2025.

Additionally, she loves to travel and has visited destinations around the world, including Greece, Turkey, Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, China, Egypt, Jordan, Israel and the United States.

Florence is an active member of AMIA (Alberta Music Industry Association), SAC (Songwriting Association of Canada), SOCAN (Society of Composers Authors and Music Publishers of Canada), and CARAS (Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences).

Working independently on her own label, Foxwell continues to write, record, and release music while maintaining full ownership of her catalogue. Her latest work, “Not Today,” carries forward her tradition of honest, heartfelt songwriting-rooted in real life and delivered with her unmistakable prairie voice.
