For the Love of Music02 / 14 / 2014

“Every journey starts with a single step.” – Confucius

Music is powerful. Music is an international language that knows no boundaries. It can console, inspire, motivate, or just make you feel good when you’ve had a crappy day. Music speaks to your soul and it has always been a huge part of my life and I can’t imagine a day without it.

You could probably say that when I started writing I fell into it by accident. By that I mean I didn’t sit down with the intention of writing a bunch of songs to record. Playing the guitar was always something I did when I was growing up to console myself. But being a farm wife and raising three kids, well, life just got a little too busy and my guitar got put away for years. It wasn’t until I was going through a lot of personal changes that I started playing my guitar again.

Change is something we most often fight because let’s face it, change can be down right scary. But change is inevitable, nothing stays the same. The first song I ever wrote was “Open Windows.” It is about trying to find the positive in a negative situation. It’s all too easy to point out and find the negative in our lives but I believe that something positive can always come out of every negative situation. Sometimes when we’re in the middle of it we just can’t see it. Well that one song just led to a second, then a third until eventually I had enough songs for an entire album and then a second album.

As we achieve our goals we set new ones, always raising that bar just a little bit higher. So here I am and I’m still on this wonderful musical journey! Nobody can give you a road map and most days I don’t know what the hell I’m doing or where I am going but I continue putting one foot in front of the other for “the love of music” and sometimes I wonder where and when it will end. I also feel very blessed to have been able to work with the great musicians and people that have made my two albums possible! Thank you, you know who you are!

Yesterday I completed my voting for the 2014 Juno Awards and as I was listening to their music I couldn’t help but think and dream of their journey and how different theirs has been, but at the same time there is a common thread…we all do it “for the love of music.” There is a ton of talent out there, so go out and discover some. As far as when my journey will end…who knows, but dreaming is free baby!
